MacOS 8.0 Installation Work Around

I have one of the first-generation PowerMacs (a 7100/66) that's been clock-chipped. As the readme file warns may happen, the Mac OS 8 installer reports that it cannot be used on my machine but that I can run each of the many installers by hand. Well, this is annoying at best. However, by using the "Wish I were..." extension (which changes the 'mach' value that the gestalt system call returns) to set the 'mach' value to the correct one for my machine (i.e., setting it for a stock PowerMac 7100/66), I was able to get the installer to run without any problems. I imagine this trick will work for anyone with an accelerated PowerMac 6100/7100/8100. The only caveat is that you can't boot off of the CD-ROM since that would not load the "Wish I were..." extension. The "Wish I were..." extension can be found on the Clock-chipping home page.

Hope this information is useful.

Looks like an accelerated Q605/LC475 will also need the "Wish I were..." extension prior to the MacOS8 installation.
